Healthcare delivery is constantly and rapidly upgrading through the integration of modern digital technologies. The digital transformation in healthcare is achieved through the production, integration and intelligent use of digital technologies and systems such as electronic health records, telemedicine, wearable health devices, environmental sensors, robotics, online healthcare tools, health data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
These digital technologies and systems provide unprecedented opportunities for healthcare providers in the fields of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to familiarize healthcare professionals with modern digital technologies applied in the healthcare sector in order to enable them to instill their experience and knowledge in the development of modern digital health systems and to use these systems to achieve their goals in the field of healthcare provision.
The Health Informatics Laboratory of the Department of Nursing of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) was founded in 1996. Its main objective is to train students of the Department of Nursing by enabling them acquire the necessary skills in digital health (e.g. health analytics, machine learning in health, artificial intelligence in health) in order to adequately address existing and upcoming challenges in their workplaces.
